March 12, 2025—President Trump reinstated Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum imports early today. The tariffs, originally imposed during President Trump’s first administration, apply a 25% duty on certain steel imports and derivative steel products.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) confirmed the reinstatement in CSMS #64348411 and CSMS #64384496, issued this morning. The agency stated that the Secretary of Commerce had certified the collection of duties, which took effect at 12:01 a.m. EDT.
In response, both the European Union and Canada announced immediate retaliatory measures.
The EU responded with tariffs on $28.33 billion worth of U.S. goods starting April 1, 2025. The two-stage EU countermeasure includes tariffs on U.S. boats, motorbikes, workshop tools, household appliances, and more.
Canada announced 25% retaliatory tariffs on more than $20 billion worth U.S. goods today, set for implementation on Thursday. These tariffs are in addition to the 25% retaliatory tariffs imposed by Ottawa on March 4.
