His role is instrumental in developing internal policies, overseeing customs compliance matters spanning tariff classification, Customs Supply Chain Security Programs (C-TPAT, Trusted Trader), and Forced Labor issues. He acts as an internal consultant for BASF’s global businesses, navigating U.S. Customs and regulatory landscapes that impact international trade. Additionally, he monitors federal agency regulations, including the FDA, EPA, APHIS, and the DEA, impacting BASF’s import and export activities.

Richard’s commitment to AAEI is remarkable. He served as Chair of the Association from 1998 to 2000 and served as a member of the Board of Governors from 1996 to 2016. His leadership extended to co-chairing AAEI’s Chemicals Committee from 2003 to 2018.

He also contributed significantly during his two terms on the U.S. Treasury Advisory Committee on Commercial Operations of the U.S. Customs Service (COAC).
